QlikWhat? QlikView

QlikWhat

By Kristen A., QlikView Developer

Chances are you are new to QlikView or looking for a BI tool, but you’re not sure where to begin. If that describes you, then you’re in the right spot. I’m going to go over what QlikView is, how to get started and self service.

What is QlikView?

I get that question a lot when people as what I do for a living. I usually say, “oh I’m in IT” and then if they ask me more about it I go into, “I take people’s data and make reports and charts.” After that I usually get the “oh that’s nice” and then on to so where are you from question.  It always makes me wonder how else can I explain it.

I recently saw a great video that explains what QlikView is. I high recommend watching it.

This is what Doug says:

  1. Consolidate information from multiple sources – this means that you can grab data from different sources they don’t all have to reside in one place. So, you have a few excel files and 3 databases. That is ok. You can link data from those four sources together if they share a common attribute.
  2. Search information with google-like ease of use – this is the sauce that brings QlikView alive. With the associative model you can literally search the entire data set that you brought in. With this method, you no longer have to understand where the user is going to go. Where they go next is up to them. To read more on this topic download QlikView’s whitepaper.
  3. Visualize – Take your data and create charts, tables, and graphs.

Why QlikView?

  • Reporting in traditional bi takes too long
  • Making any change in traditional bi tools takes forever
  • Traditional bi tools lack mobility (a whole other topic)

How to get started

Download QlikView. You can download a full desktop version of QlikView! The only thing you can’t do is share applications or open other applications without a license.

For your next step, I recommend going though the build of your first application.  This walks you through loading data and building the end user interface.

After that, try it with your data!

I’m stuck!!

Don’t worry, the QlikView community has you covered.  Search to see if anyone else has had the same problem or post a new thread. I’m always amazed with how helpful all the qliksters out there are.
